Improving Union-Management Relations

Organizations which have established environments of respect, trust and positive relationships between union and management will see improved employee retention, reduced costs related to unresolved disputes and an improved agility in all areas of change management. The purpose of this three-hour workshop is to enhance the participants’ understanding of their roles and responsibilities within the unionized setting and to learn, through a combination of lecture and group work, conflict resolution competencies.

  1. Introduction and “Bargaining Game”: This game is designed to help participants to learn short term vs. long term gains of certain competitive styles. It demonstrates the advantages of collaborative problem solving and some of the potential pitfalls of overly competitive behaviour.
  2. Presentation : We will be learning about the rights and responsibilities of the supervisors and union representatives, ensuring we cover some of the legal framework in which their relationship is situated. We then move on to “competencies” of conflict resolution, including:
    • Interest-based approaches to conflict resolution
    • The impact negative attributions of one another can have on resolving conflict
    • Behaviours and structures that build trust
    • The importance of active listening
  3. Applying what we have Learned: (custom-designed exersize, depending upon needs of the client. Typically, may work jointly on an initiative. May participate in a collaboration game/exersize, etc.)
